A Taste of Handcrafted Heritage

Chambers Note

A Taste of Handcrafted Heritage

When we talk about Italian artisanal goods, we are talking about more than just products—we are talking about history, passion, and a way of life. From the rolling hills of Tuscany to the bustling workshops of Milan, Italy’s artisans have, for generations, shaped leather, woven fabrics, and sculpted metals into objects that are not just beautiful, not just high-performing, but timeless. And here, in South Africa, we find a land rich with its own traditions, its own deep appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. The meeting of these two worlds presents a remarkable opportunity, one that can manifest a new experience of authenticity, design and ultimately a way of life.

We know that Italian goods have long held a special place in the hearts of South Africans. Whether it’s the hand-stitched leather of a Florentine bag, the smooth pour of an espresso machine engineered in Turin, or the bold flavours of artisanal Parmigiano-Reggiano, these are not just commodities—they are experiences. They tell a story and call back memories. And in a world where consumers increasingly seek meaning in what they buy, where they look for the human touch in the things they bring into their homes, Italian artisans stand ready to meet that demand. It is up to us—entrepreneurs, crafts-people, importers, logistics companies, consumersto build the bridges that will bring these extraordinary products to more people, in more communities, across this great and varied country.

The value of craftsmanship is universal and universal things unite. Two upcoming ItalCham events aim to celebrate the virtues and delights of quality. Tonight at the newly opened Supersconto in Stellenbosch, we host a speed networking event to exchange ideas on imports, logistics and other activities which enable the flow of the best goods around the world. Next month at Baglios in Joburg, we gather around the timeless excellence of Italian gelato.

When we invest in craftsmanship, we invest in people. We create jobs, we imbue skill, we foster innovation, we build relationships that span continents. Imagine a future where the skills of Italian artisans are shared with South African creators, where knowledge is exchanged, where new businesses are born from this partnership. That future is not a distant dream—it is within reach. And so today, let us commit to strengthening these ties, to championing quality over convenience, and to ensuring that the legacy of Italian craftsmanship finds a lasting home right here in South Africa.

This event, taking place on 02 April 2025 from 09:00 to 11:45, will bring together key stakeholders to explore how the NHI can facilitate access to cutting-edge treatments while maintaining a sustainable healthcare system.

With opening remarks by H.E. Mrs. Sandra Kramer, EU Ambassador, the dialogue aims to foster collaboration, drive innovation, and shape a patient-centered healthcare future for South Africa.

Nolands Foundation

Creating hope – cultivating change

When Nolands was founded in 1976, relationships were at the heart of the business. Nothing has changed, and the heartfelt philosophy of people first, is still at the company’s core. Through the Nolands Foundation, positive changes are being made, mental well-being is being nurtured, resilience is being instilled, and hope is being created – all to inspire brighter futures for young South Africans.

There are three powerful initiatives that drive the Nolands Foundation’s work:

2B Project

The 2Be Project helps young people build a solid foundation on which they can build. Our comprehensive programs are run at schools, and engages learners, teachers, principals, and parents/guardians. The programme focuses on imparting values, such as ethics, principles, and character development.

The NOVA Initiative

As a result of social media, broken family units, and negative influences, mental well-being is at an all-time low, and teenage suicide rates are deeply concerning. Through the NOVA initiative which launched on the 5th of March 2025, the Nolands Foundation is committed to addressing critical mental health challenges and is actively engaging with educators, principals, teachers, parents, and learners to find a solution.

Proud To Be She

Far too often, female learners miss crucial days of school due to their inability to access sanitary products during their menstrual cycles. The Proud to be She initiative supports these young women by distributing reusable sanitary products and facilitating workshops that guide them through their journey into womanhood.

If you’d like to learn more or join the Nolands Foundation in making a difference, please contact Paul Jones, the CEO of the Nolands Foundation.

L'Italia in 10 Selfies

A human-centered economy that helps build the future

Italy in 10 Selfies” every year tells about some of the country's records, often little-known or underestimated ones, that determine the features of an economy that is more human-oriented and, therefore, more promising for the future. Ecco Chamber will feature some of these factual selfies in the upcoming editions.

Italy: The Undisputed Leader in Pasta Production and Exports

Italy stands as the world’s top producer of pasta, with an impressive 3.67 million tons produced annually—far surpassing competitors like the United States (2 million tons), Turkey (1.99 million tons), and Egypt (1.2 million tons). This thriving industry generates a €7 billion turnover, with over 60% of production destined for international markets. In 2023 alone, Italy exported 2.2 million tons of pasta, with 1.5 million tons reaching EU countries.

Beyond quantity, Italy also leads in global pasta exports, covering all forms—raw, cooked, and filled—valued at $4.4 billion, ahead of China ($1.2 billion), Turkey ($0.9 billion), and Germany ($0.5 billion). The sector continues to drive innovation, investing 10% of its revenue in research and development, while prioritizing sustainability by cutting water usage by 20%, reducing carbon emissions by 21% since 2013, and recycling 95% of production waste.

With a perfect blend of tradition, quality, and innovation, Italy’s pasta industry remains a global benchmark for excellence.
