The Vision We Wish to Inspire

Antonia Rossi, born in Firenze, always dreamed of venturing beyond Italy's borders. Her entrepreneurial spirit was evident from a young age, inspired by her parents who ran a local bed and breakfast. After completing her studies in international business, Antonia sought a place where she could blend her Italian heritage with new the lessons of the big wide world. South Africa, with its vibrant culture and emerging markets, exceeded these needs.

In 2024, Antonia arrived in Johannesburg with little more than a suitcase and her grandmother’s secret gelato recipes. The initial years were challenging, yet inspiring. In a young democracy, she nevertheless faced cultural barriers, stiff competition, and the occasional bout of homesickness. But Antonia's determination was unwavering and her fortunes began to change when she connected with the Italian expatriate community across Gauteng.

At an event held by the Chamber of Commerce, she met Stefania, a fellow Italian who owned a successful import business. Stefania saw potential in Antonia's vision and offered to help her source the finest ingredients from Italy. With her support, Antonia was able to maintain the authenticity of her gelato, setting her apart from competitors. She also met Mario, an experienced chef who became her mentor, guiding her through the intricacies of running a food business in South Africa.

With the backing of her new-found Italian network, Antonia began by selling her homemade gelato from a small cart at local markets. Word of her authentic Italian flavors spread, and soon she had saved enough to open her first gelato shop in the bustling district of Rosebank. La Dolce Vita, as she named it, quickly became a local favorite. Her commitment to quality and authenticity, bolstered by the support of her Italian friends, led to rapid success.

As her business grew, so did her reputation. Stefania introduced her to other influential members of the Italian community, and together they helped her navigate the complexities of expanding her business. Antonia used her network to open multiple locations across Gauteng and eventually in Cape Town too. She diversified her offerings, adding an array of Italian pastries, coffee, and light meals to her menu, travelling back to Italy for annual trade fairs to keep up with the best Italian products and trends. What’s more, her cafés became hubs of cultural exchange, where locals and expatriates alike gathered to savor a taste of Italy in the heart of South Africa.

Antonia's entrepreneurial journey wasn’t just about business success; she was deeply committed to giving back to the community. She established a training program for underprivileged youth, teaching them culinary skills and providing employment opportunities in her cafés. This initiative not only empowered many young South Africans but also fostered a sense of family within her company.

During this time, Antonia's personal life flourished as well. She met Marco, a fellow Italian entrepreneur, at one of Stefania's parties. They fell in love, married, and started a family. Their children grew up bilingual, steeped in both Italian and South African cultures. Antonia and Marco's shared passion for their heritage and business created a strong foundation for their family.

By 2040, Antonia has built a thriving empire with over a dozen locations. Her success story was featured in various business magazines, celebrating her as a trailblazer who brought a slice of Italy to South Africa while making a positive social impact. Antonia's journey from a small gelato cart to a renowned business person exemplifies the power of community, resilience, and a commitment to quality. Through her hard work and heart, she not only achieved her dreams but also enriched the lives of those around her, creating a lasting legacy in her adopted home.

Unlock Sustainable Growth Workshop with Peter Rosseel

451764628_122107952876392500_4009891407114992429_n.jpg

On Tuesday, July 16, ItaCham participated in a breakfast session hosted by the Belgian Chamber of Commerce in South Africa. The event, held in collaboration with the British Chamber of Business in Southern Africa and the Italian-SA Chamber of Trade and Industries, took place at Henley Africa and featured an insightful discussion by Peter Rosseel on Strategy and Leadership.

Key Takeaways from Peter Rosseel's Talk:

Bridging Strategy and Implementation:
Rosseel emphasized that effective strategy goes beyond theory, focusing on translating vision into actionable steps. His expertise lies in making strategy actionable, driving meaningful change, and reshaping organizational culture through individual behaviors.

The Importance of Culture:
Culture, defined by organizational behavior, is crucial for translating values into actions. Rosseel highlighted the significance of values like punctuality and respectful communication, stressing the role of feedback in fostering learning and growth.

Just-in-Time Training:
Rosseel advocates for timely and relevant training to enhance strategy execution and individual performance, ensuring that learning is practical and applicable.

Balancing Ambition and Feasibility:
His approach to strategy spans three years, balancing long-term goals with immediate needs. Operational meetings focus on current demands, while strategic meetings ensure long-term objectives are met.

Leadership and Psychological Safety:
Rosseel believes that leadership plays a pivotal role in strategy execution, setting the tone for desired behaviors and fostering a culture of learning and adaptation. He emphasized the need for psychological safety, open dialogue, and constructive feedback to drive innovation and organizational success.

Valuing Expertise:
He advocates for recognizing professionals' specialized knowledge without necessarily placing them in leadership roles, ensuring they feel respected and incentivized.

The Role of Feedback:
Feedback is essential for growth and alignment, with robust mechanisms necessary to prevent organizational stagnation.

Storytelling in Strategy Implementation:
Rosseel views strategy implementation as storytelling, engaging people in a narrative that resonates and ensures understanding and commitment across the organization.

Effective Learning Environments:
Traditional training methods often fall short. Rosseel promotes interactive learning environments characterized by meaningful dialogue and practical application.

Culture Change and Leadership:
Changing organizational culture involves shifting behaviors to align with strategic objectives. Leaders must embody and champion this change, fostering trust and alignment.

 Managing Resistance to Change:
Resistance to change is normal and must be managed effectively. Informing and involving employees early on, providing clear explanations, and addressing complacency are crucial for success.

In conclusion, Peter Rosseel's philosophy revolves around leveraging expertise, fostering a culture of feedback and learning, and driving strategic alignment through compelling narratives and inclusive leadership. His approach, rooted in practicality and empathy, sets the stage for sustained growth and excellence.
