Chambers Note

Bona Fide Practice

It’s only champagne if it comes from the Champagne region in France. Similarly, Prosecco can only be made in the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions in northeast Italy. Grana Padano, Parmigiano and certain kinds of balsamic vinegar are all protected in the same way. Many might consider the issue petty, resembling a kind of culinary political correctness. But consider the alternative: where producers of low-quality products free-ride on the artisanal reputation developed over centuries while gradually destroying this reputation.

Counterfeiting has been called the world’s second oldest profession, but the preservation of authenticity is a major contemporary issue. Deepfake videos and counterfeit crypto-currencies are modern manifestations of an old problem that will continue to exist. So common is the issue of counterfeiting that many of us can easily determine a knock off item of brand name clothing.

A more difficult but no less real matter relating to authenticity is that of culture and tradition. While perhaps the term cultural appropriation is thrown around too liberally as a means of scorning people wanting to experiment outside the bounds of their immediate cultural settings, the damage done to culture and traditions through cultural imitations, stereotypes or tropes can be real, especially when these tropes are monetized.

Cultural authenticity is vital in preserving the integrity and richness of a community's traditions, values, and identity. It ensures that cultural expressions—whether in art, music, literature, or rituals—remain true to their origins, fostering a deep connection to heritage. This authenticity allows for the accurate transmission of cultural knowledge and practices across generations, maintaining the unique characteristics that define a community.

In a globalized world, where cultures frequently interact and influence one another, considering the cultural authenticity of things safeguards against the erosion of cultural diversity. It helps prevent the dilution or misrepresentation of traditions, which can occur when aspects of one culture are adopted or commercialized without understanding or respecting their original context.

Moreover, cultural authenticity is essential for the self-determination and empowerment of communities. It allows them to tell their own stories and express their identities on their own terms, rather than through the lens of outsiders. This autonomy fosters a sense of pride and belonging, contributing to the overall well-being of individuals within the community.

In the same way that we might become wise to the counterfeiting of clothing or food, there are ways of engaging with culture and tradition while ensuring it is the real thing. In everything we do as the Camera di Commercio we keep in mind the importance of authenticity  to protect our culture, our brands and our institutions whose preservation is in the interests of us all.

nuclear in south africa
sector snapshot

nuclear-power-plant-4535760_1280.jpg

In recent years, a growing number of African countries have announced ambitious plans to build nuclear power plants, signalling a new interest in this form of energy. Countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda are actively exploring how to transition to nuclear energy to meet their growing energy needs.

The growing gap for nuclear energy on the African continent has not gone unnoticed internationally. Russia in particular has pushed to supply nuclear equipment to African countries. For example, the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) and the Russian company TVEL have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate in the production of nuclear fuel. This agreement was signed last year, shortly before South Africa hosted the BRICS summit.

Currently, South Africa's Koeberg power plant in Cape Town remains the only operational nuclear power plant in Africa. In operation since 1984, Koeberg has two reactors that generate just under 2000 MW of power, comprising between 5% and 6% of the national energy mix. South Africa, a country highly dependent on fossil fuels and having struggled with rolling blackouts for more than a decade, plans to expand its nuclear capacity and extend the operational life of the Koeberg power plant by additional decades.

In South Africa, the issue of nuclear energy is currently at the center of public debate. On 16 August, the Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, announced the temporary withdrawal of plans to acquire new nuclear energy, following a legal challenge by the Southern African Faith Communities' Environment Institute and Earthlife Africa Johannesburg. These organizations raised concerns about the lack of public participation in the decision-making process and the unfair procedure that characterized the project. Ramokgopa cited the need for greater public consultation, explaining however that this is only a temporary stop.

This development reflects the tensions and challenges that accompany South Africa's path towards a possible expansion of its nuclear programme, in a context where the balance between energy needs, geopolitical priorities and environmental issues remains delicate.
